From June 16 to 18, 2025, Zarika Association took part in a three-day study visit in Slovenia, co-funded by the European Union and hosted by our longtime partner organization Aspira. Along with colleagues from six other NGOs and youth centers based in Poland, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria, we explored five inspiring youth centers across Slovenia: Youth Center Trbovlje, Youth Center Žalec, Youth Center Celje, Lojtra Association, and Youth Center Zagorje.
Each visit was marked by the warmth, authenticity, and generosity of the youth workers, project managers, and directors who hosted us. Their willingness to share openly about their operational structures, current struggles, and proud achievements allowed for honest and meaningful exchanges. For example, we had a lovely discussion on what “safe space” means in the context of youth work and what strategies we can apply to build such spaces for our target groups but also teams and partnerships.
A few key themes emerged throughout our journey. The strong role of municipal support in sustaining and expanding youth work stood out as a significant contributor to the centers’ success. Many of the centers have also leveraged EU programs like Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps to innovate and extend their outreach. In addition, several centers have leveraged alternative funding streams by operating enterprises such as cafés, restaurants, or hostels, and by organizing cultural and community events.
Beyond learning about the Slovenian context, this was also a space for cross-border exchange. Together, we reflected on our diverse realities and brainstormed practical ways to improve our work and better support young people in our communities. We return with new connections, fresh ideas, and a deeper understanding of how youth work thrives in different local contexts. We are thankful to Aspira for making this study visit happend and to all the organizations and individuals who contributed to this impactful experience.
